ICL: Byron Herbert Reece: An Introduction, July 11 - July 25
Reece has been named by the Georgia General Assembly “Georgia’s Appalachian Poet/Novelist.” Born in 1917, he was a native of the Choestoe District of Union County. There with his family he pursued a livelihood through subsistence farming. Captivated early in childhood by the world of literature, Reece published in his brief lifetime four volumes of poetry and two novels, all to critical acclaim.
This three session course is designed for persons whose knowledge of Reece is scant or altogether lacking, but who have an interest in learning more about this mountain man who was considered for a Pulitzer Prize in poetry and was inducted posthumously into the Georgia Writer’s Hall of Fame. Participants will learn about his relationship to YHC, and the second session will be a visit to the Byron Herbert Reece Farm & Heritage Center, located one mile north of Vogel State Park on Highway 129.
John Kay is an emeritus member of the YHC faculty. In 1991 he was a co-founder of ICL, for whom he has led a number of courses. John chaired the committee that organized the Byron Herbert Reece Society in 2003, and he served as chair of the Society for 12 years during the period the Farm & Heritage Center was established.
