The holiday season is just around the corner and there’s no better place to spend it than the mountains of North Georgia. Lake Chatuge has a fantastic lineup of holiday events sure to get everyone in the holiday spirit. Take in beautiful light and tree displays and spot Santa in the local Christmas parade. Drive up and stay awhile with one of the special holiday packages at our resorts and dine on delicious holiday food. While you’re in town, shop for unique gifts for everyone on the nice list at one of Lake Chatuge’s artisan shops and specialty stores. There’s so much to enjoy at Lake Chatuge this holiday season.
The first stop on any holiday Lake Chatuge getaway should be the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds, which transform into a winter wonderland each holiday season, covered in thousands of sparkling lights. Mountain Country Christmas in Lights, the Fairgrounds’ annual holiday spectacular, features arts and craft vendors, live music, food and a meet and greet with old Saint Nick himself, Santa Claus. While enjoying all the holly, jolly entertainment, guests can explore the many unique walkable light displays that line the Fairground trails. Visit Poinsettia Place, Candy Cane Lane, Santa’s Workshop, Toyland, Frosty’s Trail and other beautifully decorated, festive and twinkling light exhibits.
Mountain County Christmas in Lights kicks off Thanksgiving night, operating every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night from 6 to 9 p.m. through December 29. Tickets are $5 per person. Children age 12 and under are free.
The annual Towns County Sheriff's Christmas Parade will also make its way through town over Thanksgiving weekend. On Saturday, November 30, locals and guests alike can watch the long line of beautiful and festive floats as they head from Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds east to Hiawassee Town Square. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for a special appearance from Santa Claus!
The holiday cheer doesn’t stop there. Brasstown Valley Resort offers several holiday experiences for the whole family to enjoy. Holiday celebrations at the resort kick off with the annual tree lighting and the opening of the resort’s traditional Gingerbread Village on Wednesday, November 27 at 6 p.m. These charming and edible creations, built each year by Towns County Schools third grade classes, decorate the lobby and form a charming village full of gumdrops, candy canes and other holiday sweets with a small electric train winding through the display.
Light refreshments will be served in the main lobby during the resort’s festivities. The event is free and open to the public, and will be followed by the resort’s annual Thanksgiving Eve Feast, a paid buffet dinner. Brasstown Valley Resort also hosts Thanksgiving Day buffet dinner, Christmas Eve dinner and Christmas Day dinner. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 706-379-4617.
In addition to Thanksgiving feasts, Brasstown offers two chances to have breakfast with Santa Claus on December 14 and 21. On both mornings, guests can dine with Kris Kringle from 8:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. in the dining room. Breakfast must be purchased to enjoy time with Santa.
