THE POETRY OF RAINER MARIA RILKE by J. Patrick Mahon
Rilke was born to German-speaking parents in Czechoslovakia. Pundits recognize him as one of the greatest poets of the Twentieth Century. In part, Rilke’s poetry helps us live and work through a pandemic. On a larger scale, his writing "help us get back to ourselves before it is too late." (Thomas Merton, Literary Essays, at 340)
We will study together selected poems, his Book of Hours, and his Letters to A Young Poet. Participants will also be encouraged to write and share poetry of their own on selected Rilke’s themes.
J. Patrick Mahon is a retired Georgia educator having served 23 years as a high school principal. He is an avid reader, a published author, and enthusiastic photographer. He and his wife Joan have lived in Young Harris since 2002. He currently serves as ICL Vice-President.
