Event Description:

6 Sessions, Tuesday, April 16 – May 21, 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Rome fashioned itself in the image of Greece.  The Classical Values and the Golden Mean influenced every aspect of sculpture, drama, music, temples and other architecture. The class will look at defining epic stories, Roman portrait busts, the development of the alphabet, Roman baths and engineering feats producing the Coliseum, aqueducts, and other types of buildings.  Famous figures of the times include: Aphrodite of Knidos, Plato, Socrates, Zeus, Pericles, and Aristotle, whose most famous student was Alexander the Great.  This self-styled hero in the 320's BCE created the largest empire the world had ever known, marching his armies for 11,000 miles undefeated.  The city of Alexandria, Egypt that Alexander the Great founded, had a library which contained 700,000 volumes and the world's first museum.  All this from a man who wore what we would call now a mini-skirt! Discover just how many ideas and inventions from this era of history have shaped and been a part of your life. Students: please bring a pen and notebook to take notes. Not because it will improve your memory - which it will - but because there are so many interesting reference materials online that we won't be able to cover it all in class.
